Sorano and Pitigliano
Return to Scansano farmhouse | |
Breakfast at the farm and a full day excursion by minibus to Sorano and Pitigliano.
Sorano is a small medieval town that remains dominated by its warring past: it is crowned by the Aldobrandeschi fortress, a fine - and intimidating - example of Renaissance military architecture. Many of the buildings of the oldest part of town are built into the rock on which the town rests. The town center displays the many coats of arms of its ruling families, the Aldobrancheschi, Orsini, and Lorena. In the surrounding area are several castle ruins, strongholds of those families in their days of power.
Departure for Pitigliano.
Pitigliano is situated in a spectacular spot, where it seems to grow out of a rocky hilltop, surrounded by a gorge on all sides. In the town are palaces and medieval buildings, filled with many fine works of art, as well as museums of archeology and sacred art. The town, which is Etruscan in origin, came under Roman rule, and eventually to the great families that dominated Tuscany until the establishment of the Grand Duchy under the Medici.
Lunch in a local restaurant.
Return to Scansano. Dinner at the farm.
