Monday, September 27th 2004 A relaxing day tour of Pistoia | |
Breakfast at the hotel, and a day tour of Pistoia.
Pistoia today is a busy contemporary city that nevertheless preserves its ancient character. Many beautiful churches, filled with works of art, are found within its walls. Palaces and government buildings, some of which are still in use, can be toured. Pistoia is of Etruscan origin, pre-dating nearby Florence. During Roman times the town was used as a stopover for food and rest by Roman forces before crossing the Apennine Mountains. Evidence of its long history can be seen in its walled structure, which was constructed over a period of 13 centuries. The market, a wonderful and authentic shopping experience, is an absolute must for any visitor to Italy who wants to know the country as its natives do. Pistoia succeeds in impressing the visitor with a strong sense of the Italian continuity of life through the centuries. History is respected and incorporated into the everyday life of its citizens.
Points of interest that you will experience include the Piazza del Duomo; where you will see the Duomo and Battistero (the baptistery), the Tribunale (court of law), the Tomba di Catilina, and many fascinating examples of Renaissance art and architecture.
Dinner at a local restaurant that specializes in wines.
